Download the official Pearson Edexcel GCSE Chinese (9–1) Paper 4: Writing in Chinese Higher Tier question paper for the Summer 2025 examination series (1CN0/4H). This authentic Edexcel exam paper contains the complete set of live GCSE Chinese writing and translation tasks used during the June 2025 examinations.
The Higher Tier paper includes both Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese versions, allowing students to complete the examination using their preferred character system. Students answer extended writing tasks, opinion-based responses, formal articles, formal letters, and advanced translation exercises designed to assess grammatical accuracy, fluency, organisation, and sophisticated written communication skills in Chinese.
Question 1 offers a choice between two extended informal-writing tasks. Students either write about Chinese culture, including Chinese food, cultural learning experiences, opinions about learning different cultures, and future cultural events, or write an article about travel plans, accommodation preferences, holiday shopping experiences, and opinions about travelling with family. These tasks require approximately 80–110 Chinese characters and assess the ability to express opinions, justify ideas, and use a range of tenses accurately.
Question 2 contains advanced formal-writing tasks requiring approximately 130–180 Chinese characters. Students choose between writing a formal article about school rules for a Chinese newspaper or writing a formal letter applying to become a volunteer guide at a London exhibition. The tasks assess persuasive writing, justification of opinions, formal register, detailed explanations, and the ability to develop extended arguments in Chinese.
The school-rules task includes discussion of UK school policies, describing incidents where classmates broke rules, opinions about strict school regulations, and suggestions for changing school rules with clear justification. The volunteer-guide task focuses on previous volunteering experience, suitability for the role, opinions about what makes a good job, and future volunteering ambitions.
Question 3 tests advanced translation skills by requiring students to translate a short English passage into Chinese. The text includes references to dancing, school performances, competitions, future travel to Beijing, and attending a summer camp to learn Chinese. Students demonstrate tense control, sentence structure, vocabulary accuracy, and natural Chinese expression.
The paper uses authentic Edexcel formatting and includes structured writing spaces, formal letter templates, article layouts, and realistic Higher Tier writing tasks identical to the live Summer 2025 examination experience.
